Sirens Salon is a Hybrid of Seattle’s Defining Characteristics

by Kayla on September 22, 2009 0 Comments

If Seattle were a massive ship, then Wallingford Ave., as it slopes downwards towards the water, would be the crow's nest. At the corner of Wallingford and 37th in a nondescript residential area, is Sirens Salon. Narrow alleyways and sidewalks bordered with summer foliage intermittently give way to breathtaking panoramic views of the city beyond. Looming like a giant in the mist is the Fremont Bridge. Lake Washington hides beneath a layer of gray fog, and rising sharply above it is the city, shining like an emerald statue.

The view from Sirens Salon at times looks as if one might fall right off the face of the earth into the atmosphere of Seattle's most infamous landmarks. But planted firmly on the sidewalk, the building, like a coastal boutique or a seaside relic, provides a safe hideout for those in need of a fabulous blowout.

On a hazy day ...

Jennifer's Body
September 18, 2009

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful girl who got possessed. And not by an insecure boyfriend. No, this girl was possessed by a demon. For those of you little boys and girls out there who don't know what a "possession" is, I will tell you. It's when you can do anything you really want and can get away with it because of something called the "insanity plea." Anyway, this girl (demon) went around and did whatever her little black heart desired, because she knew she could get away with it. Anything from skinny dipping in a lake, having slumber parties on a school night or eating a young lads esophagus. Little did she know that people were on to her shenanigans and were about to expose her for what she really is. Enough about Megan Fox, let's talk about ...

The Loft in Edmonds

by Kayla on September 22, 2009 0 Comments

Once upon a time (a few years ago), I set foot into the city of Edmonds for a special occasion. One of my dear friends was getting married. Even though I had to wear a baby blue taffeta bridesmaid dress, the ceremony was beautiful. At the end, as the bride and groom exchanged rings with a beach view in the background, I cried. Most recently, however, my trip to Edmonds was to visit the semi-newly opened cafe and social lounge, The Loft. Like the wedding, the meal was beautiful, in a different sort of way than a ceremony of course, and at the end of the meal, I cried. Well OK, maybe I didn't cry. But the meal was so wonderful, I could have made myself cry if it showed how much I truly enjoyed it.

The Alibi Room is a secret spot of Seattle

by Kayla on September 22, 2009 1 Comment

He said. She said. A witness. An alibi. There have been whispers on the street, murmurs in the crowd, voices from below and echoes in the alley that the bar that rests below Pike Place Market is hauntingly good. The Alibi Room is a secret spot of Seattle, below the busy buzz of the Market, within the walls of its enchanting history. Dlist spoke with manager Corey Ramey, patron Tita Von Fleece and bartender Brady Owen about the Alibi Room. Here's what we got out of them.

He Said: The location has been the Alibi Room for, I believe, 14 years and before that, Bugsy's Pizza. Part of the original ownership group of the Alibi Room included investors Tom Skerritt and Rick Stevenson, who wrote and produced the independent film "Expiration Date," which was mainly shot inside the Alibi Room. The Alibi Room has had a long relationship ...

Why fashion?
I grew up around fashion since I was a baby. My mother is an amazing seamstress who made customize clothing for me and siblings when we were children. My mother owns a sewing contracting business for over 10 years now. I grew up surrounded by fabrics, industrial sewing machines, patterns, intense deadlines, and thread clippings all over my clothes. I went to South Seattle Community College and received my Associate of Business and then received my Baccalaureate of Science in Fashion Marketing and Management in Spring 2009.

What NOUN has been the biggest influence on your designs? Explain.
Momma- She's strong, feminine, and super cool. She introduced me to fashion and has been so supportive with this line.

What's the best part of being a designer out of Seattle and how do you think you can benefit from that?
Tons of petite women in Seattle. My ...

Sink or Swim on Seattle Ave

by Kayla on September 22, 2009 0 Comments

Sink or Swim is both a great name and an exceedingly talented new band. Particularly being brand new, sink or swim is really the only thing a band can try to do in today's music scene. And with what these guys have to offer, they are most definitely set up to swim.

With Frank Arcega, aka The Boss Demus, on guitar and vocals, Sam Thorkildsen, aka Lbo, on bass and Robert Croot, aka Jahnny Bones, on drums, Sink or Swim plays a highly skilled set of reggae dub rock music that is both fun and mesmerizing. The band is heavily influenced by bands like Sublime and 311, but they are not a sound-alike by any means. More and more musical influences creep into their music all the time and sometimes when you least expect it. There are bits of punk, ska, surf, hip-hop, rock and even an occasional dance ...

Jay-Z
"The Blueprint 3"
September 8, 2009

While the first Blueprint album was released on a truly horrific day, it provided escapism for many at the time and remains arguably the greatest opus in Jay's catalog. The album introduced Kanye West and Just Blaze to the forefront of the production world, with soulful soundscapes to complement Jigga's timeless quotables. B3 went into production in 2008, and last spring, Jay announced the album during a Kanye West concert at Madison Square Garden. He also debuted a track from the album, "Jockin' Jay-Z." Kanye, the only producer who has been announced for the album, recently told MTV News that he and Jay had scrapped some earlier tracks recorded for the LP (ones including the Auto-Tune device West used extensively on his recent 808s and Heartbreak LP), and he also revealed that his new artist, singer Mr. Hudson, will make an ...

McCabes in Everett Review

by Kayla on September 22, 2009 0 Comments

"I enjoy it," DJ Timbo said, as he referred to his experiences working for McCabe's. "You never know what to expect every week." Sure enough, I found myself floating in the same boat; I had no idea what to expect. Waves of exhilaration sent what felt like heartbeats pounding throughout my entire body. As we approached the venue, excitement and laughter trailed our steps like fallen leaves blown from their branches. While we may not have known exactly what the night had in store for us, my friends and I anticipated an eventful and fun-filled evening at McCabe's.

My initial reaction was unlike any I had experienced before. McCabe's is not your average Seattle nightclub, especially because this venue is located in Everett. But who really loves average anyway? Sure, average is appreciated here and there, but it can become boring after seeing and experiencing the same ...

When did you realize you could cook?
When I was 7 years old. My parents came up with the rule that whoever cooked dinner didn't have to do the dishes. That was my inspiration. I hated doing the dishes!

How did your career in the culinary world unfold?
I always thought cooking was fun. I started off with simple forgiving dishes, spaghetti, chicken and rice, etc. Later I moved on to pastries and that's where fun turned into the ability to make money, thanks to my friend's parents who tried my cheesecake one day when they came over and later paid me to make them one. In high school, I would sell my creations upon request by neighbors and my parents' friends. This created the idea of becoming a chef. I went to culinary school and have been in Virginia, R.I., Georgia and the Caribbean before ...

Review of Tatters Boutique

by Kayla on September 22, 2009 0 Comments

The small boutique sits in between various shops, but the pulse of this tucked-away gem makes it a definite stand out. The source of that pulse comes straight from the owner Michele Tesler herself. When I first met the petite woman, she seemed 9 feet tall, all smiles and more than ecstatic to share her love of what she does. It was refreshing and contagious.

The boutique that opened in November 2005 was born from the desire to bring Mercer Island something it really didn't know it needed. Tesler had been happily working in oncology as a nurse at the Fred Hutchinson Center, but had realized her own fashion style had become predictable. She got in contact with a friend that was a rep for a few designers. She started to send Tesler some samples. You could almost say this is where the real story began.

Tesler credits designer ...

Seattle Food Local Favorites

by Kayla on September 21, 2009 0 Comments

The complexities of food are unlike those of any other substance. The ability to nourish the body, enrich the mind and fill our hearts are just some of food's powers. But seeing food as a form of expression, as an art, is reserved for those with a greater passion for cuisine. The end result was five great restaurants with five great chefs that were delighted to share their works of art with us.

For a little northern Italian cuisine, we stopped in at Cafe Juanita to find a light appetizer. Taking in the understated elegance of the slightly rustic decor and a dining area that looks out to a lush green garden, I was not so much prepared to be awestruck by the dish that came out. The grilled octopus antipasti ($14) with fennel, chickpeas and green sauce came out beautifully. A bright green sauce served as the base ...

Green Garage Productions

Green Garage Productions is a group of Musicians, Artists, Songwriters, Studio Engineers, and great friends unified in the belief and practice of making music that gives people more than a sound to compare to their favorite artist. "We are not Hip Hop, we're not Rock, Jazz, Techno, R&B and all those other genres you find on a drop down on myspace," explains Jordan Jeffries, AKA Don-J. Green Garage Productions really came together by a series of chance meetings and family ties. It was while Jordan was in college in Memphis, Tennessee, 1992, that he was given a cheap beat program called Hip Hop Ejay from a friend's little brother. He fell in love with the feeling of taking something as simple as a metronome and turning it into a song. Before long, he joined forces with Levoy Young (V.O.Y.), who had an old school off-white ...

Mariah Carey
"Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel"
August 25, 2009

Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel is Mariah Carey's 12th studio album, and if you believe Mariah Carey's insistence that she's eternally 12-years-old, then this means that she has a record for every year she's been alive. But more important than Mariah's quantity of output, is Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel's content. For the album Mariah worked with Timbaland, longtime collaborators Jermaine Dupri and Walter Afanasieff, but the lion's share of the album's tracks were co-written by The-Dream and Christopher "Tricky" Stewart, who, in addition to writing E=MC2 lead single "Touch My Body," are responsible for some of the best pop songs on the radio in the last few years. But that presence on the album is unlikely to supplant Mariah Carey's own, very distinctive personality. Producer The Dream wrote about ...

Establishments sometimes close for renovations, other times they shut down and lock their doors permanently. Yet despite the struggles of closure, there are the few businesses that push their way out of the rubble and reopen with a bang. Such is the case with the recently made over Crocodile Cafe in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood.

Since 1991, the Crocodile had been attracting crowds of all kinds, quickly building its reputation as a great place for the local and national music scene. This venue hosted live performances from well-known artists including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Beastie Boys, R.E.M and Death Cab for Cutie.

While many legendary feet have marched over its floors, the Crocodile has also been blessed with floods of local bands strumming their beats for hundreds of interested audiences. But on Dec. 15, 2007, this seemingly strong music venue locked its heavy wooden doors due ...

What is a good tip for someone who wants to plate food elegantly at home?

by Kayla on September 21, 2009 0 Comments

Executive Chef Bobby Moore of Barking Frog: Part of being a chef for so many years is that you learn a sense of style. You want to show off the integrity of the ingredients, have them speak for themselves. Since we're all artists, we approach the food that way. We create with a sense of beauty in our technique and seasoning. Think colors, lots of color. Be aware of the colors you're using and what's in season. Make sure, though, that it tastes good first and looks beautiful after. Taste is everything, while beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Chef-Owner Holly Smith of Cafe Juanita: Don't overfill the plate. Leaving an inch or two border of negative space between the food and inside rim of the plate makes food pop.

What's the last thing you should look at to ensure a plate is ...

How long have you been cooking professionally?

I have held the title as "the chef" for 16 years.

What led you to this industry?

A buddy of mine pulled me away from lawn mowing when I was 15. He had a job in this cool place, so I followed his lead and started washing dishes and pots. I never left the kitchen after that.

How would you describe your cooking style?

Simplicity and purity are the foundations I build upon when creating my menu items. Preserving the qualities of the ingredients I use allows the true flavors of the products to shine through and stand on their own with little adulteration. Deftly presenting them with cosmopolitan flair, I create a pedestal for the freshest food I can purvey. Classic approaches and modern refinement. Bruno
July 10, 2009

VVAASSUPP?! Since Borat is apparently SO 2006, the decision to up the ante is only natural. When "Borat" first came out, I didn't really have any idea what to expect. I think if Tom Brokaw and all the boys from "Jackass" miraculously had a retarded European baby boy, that would be the steaming pile of awesome that was Borat, and if that is any hint as to what we can expect from the upcoming "Bruno," then we are in for a treat. That is, if you are a fan of D&F jokes (no, not Dolce&Fitch you idiot, dick&fart), which I am.

Those already familiar with the character of Bruno probably know all about him from Sacha Baron Cohen's (or SBC as we're gonna call him) "Da Ali G Show." For those who don't know, Bruno is a fictional character ...

A Rosé Remedy: A Lesson In Liquidation

by Kayla on September 9, 2009 0 Comments

Hey Seattleites...let's get rowdy. Today we put to rest the inner wine racist and embrace the pink stuff. This summer sipper's name I'm referring to is rosé.

Dead are NOT the days of the common confusion that this lovely wine is sweet (thank you white zinfandel). Know that this is nothing of the sort. Please, open your mind to understand this beauty of the beast so many are so afraid of. Allow us to tell rosé's story and we'll dare you to try some, as the best form of homework you've ever had. Your classroom today; the glass. And your book; the bottle.
Rosés are generally best in their youth, when the fruit is most wild and vivid, and the color still vibrant. They offer elements of baby strawberries, bright cherry, rhubarb, and mild herbal tones and contain delicately dry acidity. Rosé, like ...

Waterfront Seafood Grill on Pier 70

by Kayla on September 9, 2009 0 Comments

In Seattle, seafood is by no means considered a rarity. But few restaurants can say they offer the tastes, sights and sounds of the Waterfront Seafood Grill. Perched on Pier 70, with executive chef Peter Levine steering the way, the Waterfront offers a luxurious setting and quality food without the snooty service.

The classic elegance of the restaurant envelops you upon entering. The warm colors of the carpet make way to black leather club chairs with light-colored wood backs around linen-covered tables. Laid out on each table are elaborately folded napkins and colored glass appetizer dishes. The scene, in conjunction with the formally dressed wait staff, gives off a timeless and tasteful vibe. Copper chandeliers hang high from the ceilings, while copper plated support beams lead up to dark slats of wood where tree branches make an appearance with small white lights intertwined, creating a romantic touch.

As I looked ...

Vain Salon

by Kayla on September 9, 2009 0 Comments

Vain Salon is cloaked in red and black, a small window giving you a glimpse into the life behind the doors. But don't be fooled, the impressive salon has nothing to hide. In fact, it's quite the opposite. One of the locations sits in the heart of Belltown, where it pulsates with an ever-revolving door of people who come from all parts of Seattle.

The hair salon was born out of a belief that self expression is something to be treasured and supported. Victoria Thomas Gentry, a transplant from New York, was instantly enveloped by the spirit of Seattle, but she also saw the opportunity to shake things up. She began her love story with an idea and determination. She felt every person should be given the opportunity to use their body, well in this case their hair, as a canvas to express to others who they are ...

Daughtry
"Leave This Town"
July 14, 2009

Daughtry's first album, simply titled, "Daughtry," became the fastest selling debut album by a rock band in the SoundScan era. It has sold more than four million copies in the U.S. and generated four top 20 pop singles. The album received four Grammy Award nominations, including a nomination for Best Rock Album. Daughtry says the title of the album, "Leave This Town," is related to the different paths people take when searching for something transcendent. "A lot of it is about how leaps of faith can set us free or tie us down," lead singer, Chris Daughtry, said. "How we often find heartache when we run from something and redemption when we run toward something." The press release announcing "Leave This Town" indicated it will include arena rockers, ballads, emotional mid-tempo songs, and even some country influence. Daughtry introduced "No Surprise ...

PC Load Letter

by Kayla on September 9, 2009 0 Comments

"PC Load Letter? What the F*&k does that mean?" In the movie "Office Space," it was simply a copy machine error Michael Bolton didn't know how to deal with. In the Seattle music scene, however, PC Load Letter is a three-piece band that you may have never heard of, but that you should definitely start listening to now. And with a new CD coming out in July, you will have the opportunity to catch them soon.

Chris Vincent and Jake Gray, who have known each other since elementary school, had started a project about four years ago and were working on recording some demo material at Chris' house. Chris has been playing guitar for about fifteen years, and Jake has played bass around the same length of time. They ran into their old elementary school buddy, Elvin Bucu, who happened to have been mastering the drums for the ...

Suite 410 Review

by Kayla on September 9, 2009 0 Comments

This place is suite! Like only the best of scavenger hunts, here is THE Seattle bar to look for. If you have been to this place already, you know what we're talking about. If you haven't been, it's about damn time you went. Suite 410 is brought to you every night by Max Borthwick and Damon and Kelly Maletta. They never publicly advertise because business is achieved through word-of-mouth, and business is BOOMING.
Relax, sit back, roll solo, roll deep, rage or read a book. Treat this suite as that sexy date spot. Kick back on the couches and use this as the antidote for office work. Better yet, use it for all of the above. Enter the doors of Suite 410 and you'll find gracious ceilings giving way to something more. Look around and you'll notice a sensible, contemporary style, minimal and to the ...

Current Hotspots in Seattle, Bellevue, Marysville and Kirkland

by Kayla on September 9, 2009 0 Comments

The harmonious clinking of martini glasses is synchronized to the tempo of rhythmically pounding high-altitude stilettos. All across Seattle, the nightlife landscape is once again emerging from its dormant winter hibernation. In a dashing escapade, fellow intern, Alix and myself dart off into the nebulous night to mingle with Seattle's nocturnal boozehound patrons. We are always up to no good, so it shouldn't surprise you the events of the night were entirely composed of preposterous shenanigans. Where shall I begin? Perhaps the part where we stumbled upon an abandoned kitchen sink properly displayed on the sidewalk where inebriated bystanders jokingly washed off their hands. Or, perchance, when we came into close proximity to a fleet of toothless drag queens dressed up as the Fanta Girls. Or how about when we inadvertently struck up a conversation with a homeless soothsayer, selling the secret location of a vampire lair in ...

La Ree Boutique

by Kayla on September 9, 2009 0 Comments

If construction cranes can be considered any measure of a city's successful and pending expansion, then Bellevue is the new business and pleasure hub of Washington. Bellevue Square mall is currently among only a handful of other shopping centers seeing impressive sales rates during this economic slump. In fact, the entire Bellevue area seems to be exponentially reaching new heights, both physically and logistically. But for the thousands that come flocking to this pristinely polished city of glossy indoor mall shopping, there is still nothing inside the Square that can hold a candle to the luxe, East-Coast charm of old-town Bellevue on Main Street. Evocative of the sweet, inviting demeanor of Greenwich Village, N.Y., it has overhanging residential complexes and a refreshing abundance of greenery (nearby Bellevue Park is ringed with maple and cherry trees). Old Bellevue, despite its history, would appear to be in its delicate and ...
